Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer

During the summer I read a couple of books.  One of the books I read was Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer, from the Twilight Saga.  I absolutely loved it! I thought it was so suspenseful and it was such a page turner.  Since I loved it so much, I am writing this review to you. The two main characters in the Twilight Saga are Bella and Edward.  Bella is the whole story and many things happen because of her and the love between her and Edward.  She (her real name is Isabella Swan) is an average 17 year old girl, who lives in Forks, Washington (aka. One of the rainiest places in the continental USA). Beforehand, she lived in Phoenix, Arizona with her mom, but then she moved in with her dad, who lives in Forks.  Edward is appears to be a 17 year old guy too.  Edward goes to Forks High School where he meets Bella, and vice versa.   On the first day of school, Bella meets Edward and first she thinks that she disgusts him.  But then after they instantly fall in love.  Throughout the series Stephenie Meyer writes about their love, just in each book she challenges their love by adding obstacles.
There are many conflicts in Eclipse that lead to the continuation to Breaking Dawn.  The main external conflict is there is terror in the city of Seattle and the Cullens are worried that it might not be someone, but a something instead.  Since they don’t know what is causing all this terror in Seattle they can't do anything to help the innocent people living there from the danger.  All through the book the Cullens are trying to fix this problem, by keeping a surveillance on what they can see from Alice (she can see the future) to make sure they don’t go out of control.  Meanwhile, Bella has a couple of internal conflicts too.  The main internal dilemma for her is that Jacob loves her too but she irrevocably loves Edward. Jacob is Bella best friend, and he is fifteen years old.  He doesn't go to the same high school as Bella or Edward because he lives on a reservation.  Jacob lives with his dad in the a little house on the Quileute reservation.  Since Bella has known Jacob since they were young, she has a special connection to him.  So Bella is caught in the middle of a love triangle!  In her mind, she is debating whether she wants to spend the rest of her life with Jacob or with Edward.
I especially like Stephenie Meyer’s books because of the way she writes.  She composes each book so vividly that it is almost impossible to not be able to visualize what she writes.  She shows that her goal is to bring her world into ours through her books.    Also there are foil characters in the Twilight Saga: one of them being Jacob.  If Jacob wasn’t a character at all in these books, Bella wouldn’t be having so many internal conflicts.  In addition to the other literary devices in the story, Meyer makes mostly the whole story take place in Forks, WA.  Mostly she did this to add to the mysteriousness of Vampires and how they can’t be in the sun.  All of these devices she adds to make the story more appealing to the reader so they will want to keep reading (and it works!).
I think this is a good book to read for 7th and 8th graders because it brings out drama, romance and real life all into one book.  The story is very suspenseful if you like to read exciting books.  If you read Harry Potter, take a break from that seven-part series and read this four-part saga.  I really loved reading these books and I think you will too!

  2. I've actually read Eclipse before, and if I didn't, and I read your blog, I wouldn't do anything else, but pick up that book! I also think you did a great job by comparing the Harry Potter series to the Twilight series. It makes Eclipse sound more interesting. I agree with you, Stephenie Meyer does always make you visualize. Great job Amanda!
